Welcome, Caregivers

Welcome to Care Sandwich

CareSandwich is bite-sized caregiving information that you can grab with your hands.Ā  We tend to smear on humor and sprinkle on skepticism.Ā  We’ll use ingredients we know, because we want to satisfy your need for useful information.Ā Ā

Ā

Caregiving is rewarding.Ā  It’s such an honor.Ā  Yes, it is…  Well, kind of…Ā  Or, sometimes the opposite?Ā  CaregivingĀ canĀ be rewarding and an honor.Ā  But at the beginning it can be so difficult and feel like failure.Ā  It turns out that going to school, learning to drive, getting a job, finding a partner, managing a home — all that stuff most people do — does not prepare us well to be a caregiver.Ā  Actually, our previous experiences give us some instincts that work against us when we are a caregiver.Ā Ā Ā

Ā

[delete:?When you care for someone in need, it can feel like failureĀ often.Ā  It’s heart-wrenching if we don’t have the tools to care for someone we love.Ā  And it can feel oppressive because we can’t hire it all out.Ā Ā  In many cases, caring for another person is sickening.Ā  (Literally, sickening). ]Ā

Ā

But we are often caring for more than one person!Ā  It’s no surprise that many people have some dread about caregiving for their childrenĀ andĀ parents.Ā  It doesn’t have to be that way.Ā  Even if caregiving will always involve some struggling, there are skills to convert some of that hard work into long lasting pride.Ā Ā Ā

Ā

By the way, humor is so important to what we do as caregivers.Ā  If you show us a caregiver who’s laughing a lot, we see a person who figured something out.Ā  But in CareSandwich we only make fun of ourselves.Ā  Trust us, that part will be easy.Ā
